RUTGER HAUER MASTERCLASS - ROTTERDAM 18-28 JUNE 2009

From 18 through 28 June 2009, the Rutger Hauer Filmfactory again serves to unite participating talent with major players in the film industry who share their knowledge and experience. Talented filmmakers worldwide are invited to challenge their abilities and refresh their cinematic views in Rutger Hauer’s Masterclass. And yes, there will be films. A lot.

Sneak Preview

The biggest tragedy of life, according to Satre, is to have a choice. This is especially true for filmmaking, told Lech Majewski in today’s masterclass on directing.

He showed a clip from his film Wojaczek, where choice was limited because the budget was almost nonexistent. "We had seven days to shoot the whole feature and could push the button on the camera only once for every scene. We could use hardly any dolly shots, which is perfect, because it forces you to think where they will be absolutely necessary.

When you have limited resources, everybody on the set flies. You can't find that kind of adrenaline on a big movie set."

Majewski turns out not to be a big fan of most modern cinema, because it tends to forget that image is the best communicator. "The TV-people", as Majewski calls them, do everything by talking, and forget to use symbolism and hidden meanings. There was symbolism and heavy imagery aplenty in his selected clip from The Gospel according to Henry (the film debut of one Viggo Mortensen).

At the end he showed the participants some exciting work in progress: fifteen minutes of The Mill and the Cross, in which Rutger Hauer plays the Flemish master Pieter Breughel.

See 12 films for 5 euro

At the end of the production line of the Rutger Hauer Filmfactory there will be 12 exciting new short films, shot by an international team of young adventurous professionals. Curious how they manage to overcome creative obstacles, logistic nightmares and other problems in just 10 days? See it for yourself!

On Monday the 29th their films will have their public premiere at Kriterion Rotterdam at 20:00, introduced by by Rutger Hauer. Tickets are only 5 euro’s, which will be donated fully to Rutger Hauer Starfish Association, a charity for children and pregnant women with HIV/AIDS.
